Doug has served as lead counsel in a variety of suits, including federal lawsuits and antitrust cases with millions of dollars at stake. He has represented clients in industries including banking, securities, real estate, construction, manufacturing and intellectual property, and cases have involved issues such as antitrust and trade regulations, trade secrets, Uniform Commercial Code disputes, zoning issues, personal injury and more.
Among his cases, Doug represented the City of Ackworth, GA, in an action filed against Cobb County over the county's attempt to purchase the city's water system. In addition to the money at stake, the city's residents could have ended up with no water and sewer. The county's original $250,000 offer was rebuffed, and the final settlement was more than $3 million, with a new agreement drawn up for county residents to obtain water and sewer permits.
In another case, Doug represented a local printer in a lawsuit filed by Microsoft in which the software developer was attempting to hold the client liable for the sale of pirated software by a customer. In addition to demanding in excess of $100,000, Microsoft insisted on the closing of the business unit. In the end, the business remained open, and Doug negotiated for a $5,000 fine to be paid by the printer's insurance carrier.
Other clients include Fat Buddies Restaurants, Crowfields Condominium Owners Association and Fallon Utilities Contractors, Inc.
Doug is co-author of "North Carolina Construction Law: Rights and Remedies" (Lorman Education Services, 1998) with Chuck Cloninger. He serves as president of Asheville High Booster Club and as vice-president of Pisgah Legal Services.
