Mary's litigation experience covers trials and appeals in state and federal court, including personal injury and wrongful death litigation and probate, estate and trust litigation. Clients include those seeking compensation for severe personal injury and wrongful death, as well as those seeking litigation services in the area of elder law, including estate and trust litigation, contested guardianships, elder abuse, exploitation and neglect matters.
Mary successfully secured verdicts and settlements ranging from $500,000 to more than $1,000,000 in complex personal injury and wrongful death matters.
Mary’s experience also includes litigating estate matters and negotiating Family Settlement Agreements in multiple actions involving will contests.
Mary obtained a $300,000 inheritance for a client who was erroneously omitted as an heir in an intestate estate. She has also compelled judicially ordered accountings for beneficiaries of trusts and has likewise successfully represented trustees in repelling challenges to their authority.
Mary represented a trustee in litigating the first dispute in North Carolina involving a contested unitrust conversion. Mary obtained favorable results for clients by challenging deeds, wills, powers of attorneys and trusts which were secured by wrongdoers through the use of fraud in an effort to exploit vulnerable elderly or disabled persons.
In the community, Mary is a Council Member on the Family Advisory Council Family Support Network of Mission Children's Hospital and is a Parent Mentor for its Parent to Parent Program. She is a Council Member of the Buncombe County Nursing Home Community Advisory Board and serves as a Volunteer attorney with Pisgah Legal Services. Mary is a Member and Volunteer with the Western North Carolina Down Syndrome Alliance and Volunteers with the Special Olympics. She served as Treasurer for the 28th Judicial District Bar and has served on the Board of Directors of Child Abuse Prevention Services and the Mountain Sports Festival. Mary is a Graduate of Leadership Asheville.
