The majority of Chuck's practice is in construction law. He represents a wide range of general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, architects, engineers, developers and owners. He has extensive experience in handling matters pertaining to projects both residential and commercial, public and private. His client list includes Mountain Air Development Corporation, Delphi Development, LLC, Mainline Supply Company, The Contractor Yard, Inc., Perry Bartsch Jr. Construction Company, DeSantana Stone Company, W. P. Hickman Company, Spaceplan Architecture Interiors and Planning, P.A., and Emory Electric, Inc.

Chuck drafts contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders and warranty language to meet the particular needs of clients. He also handles collections, lien filings, bond claims, bid protests and contractor's license issues.

Chuck is a seasoned litigator, having represented clients both large and small in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitration. Along with Doug Wilson of this firm, he defended a large construction company in a multimillion dollar lawsuit filed against it by a prominent Asheville hotel/resort, and was able to obtain a summary judgment resulting in a dismissal of virtually all of the claims against the client. He recently represented an owner/developer in a case in which the company was sued by a general contractor for $1.4 million dollars for work on a country club, and negotiated a settlement of only $250,000. In another case, he represented a local architect who was sued for negligent design of a home. He was able to get the case dismissed in the early stages of the litigation based on the expiration of the statutes of limitations, so that the architect did not have to pay anything to the plaintiffs. He also represented a couple in their lawsuit against a developer/contractor for defective construction and misrepresentation. The clients purchased their home for $215,000, and as a result of Chuck’s work the developer purchased back the home from them approximately a year later for $238,000. In a recent arbitration, Chuck obtained a recovery for his contractor client of $149,000 and the counterclaim of over $500,000 by the opposing party was denied in full.

Chuck's extensive community and professional involvement includes serving on the Asheville City Council from 1995 to 2001 and as vice mayor from 1999 to 2001. He has served on the board of directors of the North Carolina Construction Law Council, Riverlink and Quality Forward, and has chaired the Asheville Downtown Association, the Mountain Sports Festival and the Asheville Parks and Greenways Foundation. He currently serves on the boards of the Asheville Humane Society and Junior Achievement of Western North Carolina.

He co-authored "North Carolina Construction Law: Rights and Remedies" (Lorman Education Services, 1998) with Douglas Wilson, and has spoken on a variety of issues to construction trade groups and design professional organizations.
