Jeffrey works largely with small business and nonprofit clients, assisting them with increasing tax efficiency in the structuring of transactions and operations, as well as minimizing liability exposure and more. He also helps form business organizations and subsidiaries and provides tax planning advice. Clients include Givens Estates, Inc., Western North Carolina Regional Economic Development Corporation, and North Carolina Natural Products Association (NCNPA).
In addition to tax consulting, Jeffrey also works with tax controversy matters. Recently, he represented an individual facing an IRS trust fund recovery penalty in which he saved the client $350,000 when the individual was determined to be not responsible for the penalty. Jeffrey helped a nonprofit client avoid potential liability from a risky activity by setting up a subsidiary company to handle a charitable drug distribution activity. He also assisted another company in forming a subsidiary to lobby state and federal legislators while protecting the tax-exempt status of the parent company.
Jeffrey serves on the board of directors of the NCNPA and is the captain of the Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyer Tax Team, an initiative of Pisgah Legal Services to serve indigent local residents in tax controversy matters. He is a member of the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club. Recent public presentations included a panel on federal tax controversies for Pisgah Legal Services, and a session on basic liability and intellectual property law for a recent NCNPA conference. Jeffrey also attends the Southern Federal Tax Institute, an annual tax planning conference in Atlanta, GA.
